Synopsis:
This study was set to consider and test the effectiveness of a proposed program for developing 6th grade pupils' silent reading skills and improving their competences to which such skills relate.
The study seeks to provide an answer to the following question:
How effective is an enrichment program in developing 6 grade pupils' silent reading skills.
In her answer to the above question, the writer of this research based her definition of silent reading skills on the list of competences provided by the Ministry of Education for the Arabic language curriculum for the Second Cycle of the Primary Education which comprises the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades.
The researcher has also developed an enrichment program for the improvement of silent reading skills. The program is made of a selection of texts and prose pieces that takes into consideration the level of the 6th grade pupils as well as a set of activities that pupils are required to carry out subsequent to their reading of the texts and prose pieces.
The researcher has constructed criterion-referenced test to be used as a tool to measure the pupil's mastery of the competences which the researcher selected from the syllabuses applied in the schools using the results of a former study executed by a committee commissioned by the Ministry of Education to measure learning based on the silent reading competences that the pupils have.
The researcher applied the prepared program to an experimental design as part of a targeted group that consisted of two 6th grades classes in Sitra Primary School for Girls. The researcher chose these classes in particular because she teaches them in the same school which makes it easier for her to conduct the experiment. 3w31
The test was conducted before and after the experiment first with an experimental group then 3w31 with a control group.
The results of the study came as follows:
1. The average attainment of the control group in the pre-test was higher by 2.6 out of 20 than the attainment of the experimental group. This was not surprising for the researcher as she could guess the result beforehand because she was the teacher of both the groups. However, the researcher had no choice but to choose the weaker group to be the experimental group in order to test the effectiveness of the program.
2. The increase in the attainment points in the post-test for the control group was only1.36 out of 20 over the application period of the program (20 class hours)
3. The increase in the attainment points in the post-test for the experimental group for the same period (20 class hours) was3.7 out of 20 showing a better accomplishment for the experimental group over the same 20-hour period compared to the control group.
4. Although the average attainment of the experimental group was less than the control group, the difference in progress of 2.35 out of 20 in favor of the experimental group proves the effectiveness and efficiency of the program.
In other words, the gap between the two groups decreased sharply from 2.6 out of 20 in the pre-test to 0.18 out of 20 in the post-test. This shows clear evidence of the efficiency and favorable effect of the program on the experimental group.
According to the results of this study, the researcher recommends the adoption of such enrichment programs in the teaching of the Arabic language skills and their competences to help overcome the difficulties of learning that the pupils face.
