By Mona Fakhr
This study aimed at evaluating the 6th grade Arabic textbook questions and final exams in the kingdom of Bahrain during 2004-2005 academic year. It attempted to answer the following questions:
1- What are the cognitive levels of the 6th grade Arabic textbook questions and what are their percentages?
2. What are the cognitive levels of teacher-prepared 6th grade Arabic final exam questions and what are their percentages?
3. Are there any differences among cognitive level Arabic textbook questions and final exam questions?
A total of 581 textbook questions and 473 teacher- prepared Final exam questions were analyzed. Two checklists based on Bloom's six level (Remembering.
Comprehension, Application, Analysis, Synthesis, and (Evaluation) cognitive taxonomy were manipulated. Results indicated that:
a) The percentages of the cognitive levels of textbook questions were as follows: Application (40%), Comprehension (30%), Remembering (19%), Synthesis (5%), and Analysis and Evaluation (3%) each.
b) The percentages of teacher prepared questions were: Remembering (29%), Application (26%) Synthesis (7%), Evaluation (6%), and Analysis (4%).
c) When comparing the two types of questions, it can be noted that there were statistically statistically sig significant differences favoring both the teacher prepared Remembering cognitive level questions and textbook Application questions
d) No statistically significant differences were found for the other four levels of cognitive levels.
e) Percentages of the cognitive levels of the two types of questions were very close to each other.
f) Most questions tended to fall in the lower three levels (Remembering Comprehension and Application) of Bloom's taxonomy rather than the higher ones (Analysis, Synthesis and Evaluation).
