Abstract:
Background: Nurses are the predominant healthcare providers in hemodialysis facilities
carrying out the prescription and care before, throughout, and after hemodialysis. Therefore,
nursing interventions significantly minimize the risk of safety threats and maximize patients'
safety outcomes.
Aim: This study evaluated the effectiveness of implementing nursing safety strategies on
outcomes of patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis in a hemodialysis unit.
Methodology: A quasi-experimental design, one group pretest, and a posttest were utilized. The
study was conducted in a hemodialysis unit at a tertiary health care setting in Al-Muharraq City,
Kingdom of Bahrain. A convenient sample of 51 nurses who work in hemodialysis were
recruited for the study. The valid, reliable observational checklist was applied to nurses'
performance in the hemodialysis unit.
Results: The findings of the present study revealed that (74.5%) of nurses had a bachelor's
degree as their education level, and more than half of nurses (60.8%) did not attend training
sessions established by the unit. There was improving in the percentage of nurses adhering to
safety strategies in the posttest phase compared with the pretest phase at (p <0.05), increasing
in mean scores of all phases of hemodialysis. However, there was no significant improvement
in patients' outcomes.
Conclusion: The study revealed that nursing safety strategies effectively improved pre-, intra,
and post-hemodialysis nursing performance. However, nursing safety strategies did not improve
the complications that developed during or after the hemodialysis.
Recommendations: To provide nursing with continuing education and in-service training
programs about hemodialysis and nursing care. Moreover, evidence-based practice should be
integrated into all healthcare organizations' protocols and policies.
