Abstract :
Kingdom of Bahrain is one of the Arabian Gulf countries that have continuous rapid industrial development and population growth. This increases the need for clean energy and fresh water. To satisfy the required demand of power and water, Kingdom of Bahrain has build Al-Dur and Water Plant. This plant is the case study of this research. The main objective of this study is to explore the applied shift schedule selection procedures in Al-Dur Power and Water Plant in Kingdom of Bahrain. Based on the unstructured Face-to Face interviews conducted with the HR and Operations representatives, who are involved in the shift schedule selection procedure in this plant, Al-Dur Plant has changed the shift schedule five times during the period from 2012 to 2017, and reported that support was required due to unstable situation in shift schedule selection procedure, which has resulted in continuous negative impacts and complaints from the shift workers.
Hence, Al-Dur Plant current shift schedule selection procedure was investigated through the unstructured Face-to Face interviews with Al-Dur HR and Operations representatives, in order to map out (map chart) the current framework of the existing procedure. After thoroughly investigating the procedure, and based on Al-Dur Plant survey results and analysis, it was realized that there is a need to create a logical and sound procedure when selecting the shift schedule, the incorporation of new participants (Labour Union Representative, HSE Department, and Maintenance Department), and the incorporation of additional evaluation factors.
To ensure satisfactory stakeholders involvement and comprehensive evaluation criteria, a shift schedule selection decision making mechanism is developed. The application of modified selection procedure provides a clear set of needs and requirements of all participants in the selection procedure, and helps to reach consensus on the shift schedule change request.
