Abstract :
Background : End-stage renal disease ESRD is a chronic disease that has excessive adverse effects on the patient's quality of life (QoL). Identifying QoL domains and the related factors is the key to assessing the disease's impact and treatment's effectiveness in patients with ESRD. Aim: This study aims to assess the level of QoL and to identify the factors influencing the QoL for patients undergoing hemodialysis therapy (HDT). Methodology: A descriptive cross-sectional study in which 181 patients undergoing HDT were selected utilizing systematic random sampling methods from the governmental hospitals for kidney diseases in Bahrain. Patients' socio-demographic characteristics, clinical information, and kidney disease quality of life short form (KDQoL-SF) questionnaires were used. Results: The role physical scale reports the lowest score (16.3±29.1), while the highest domain scores were for emotional well-being (66.7±19.6). Socio-demographic and clinical factors correlated negatively (p<0.001) with QoL domains, including age, non-compliance with HD treatment and renal diet, fluid restriction, and low physical activity, and hypertension HTN. However other factors indicated a positive relationship with QoL domains (p<0.001) such as having caregivers, normal albumin, hemoglobin, and protein levels. The total quality of life score for ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis was low (47.4±20.0). Conclusion: Reported QoL scores for patients undergoing HDT were poor, particularly in the physical and emotional roles domains. In order to improve quality of life, it is essential to maintain regular HD sessions, follow a renal diet, limit fluid consumption, and practice exercises regularly. Educating patients and their families are integral to the APN's role in modifying unhealthy lifestyle patterns and developing effective behaviors.
