Abstract :
The study aimed to identify the relationship between the criteria of marital selection and compatibility between couples in a sample of male and female employees in the Kingdom of Bahrain. The sample, selected using a snowball sampling method, included 100 persons, divided into 50 males and 50 females. A questionnaire was applied to the sample to identify the key criteria set by an individual when making a martial selection, and a measurement of marital compatibility was also applied (Alenezi, 2009). The researcher used the descriptive approach (comparative correlation) to achieve the objectives of the study. The study concluded that morals and religion are the key criteria chosen by males and females. Criteria selected by males were ranked from the most to the least preferred as follows: relationships, beauty, good reputation, education level, understanding, responsibility, kinship. As for females, the ranking was (good reputation, love or relationships, responsibility, understanding, education level, beauty, kinship). The study also found a statistically significant positive correlation was found at level (0.05) between educational level criteria and the social and structural dimensions of marital compatibility, in addition to a statistically significant negative correlation was also found between at level of significance (0.05) between good reputation and the educational dimension of marital compatibility in couples. The study also showed that there are not statistically significant differences on the compatibility measurement for the sub-dimensions: the structural, emotional, social, personal and educational. As for the sample of wives, a statistically significant positive correlation was found at level (0.05) between morals and the social and educational dimension of marital compatibility. A statistically significant positive correlation was also found at level (0.01) between morals and the personal and emotional dimensions in addition to the total score. The study also showed a statistically significant correlation at level (0.05) between kinship criterion and the educational level and the personal dimension and the personal dimension and also between responsibility and the social dimension of marital compatibility. Differences of statistical significance were found at level (0.05) between the educational dimension and the total score of marital compatibility for wives whose marriage has lasted for (1-4 years) and (5-9 years), while there were statistically significant differences at (0.05) in the structural and emotional dimensions of marital compatibility for wives whose marriage lasted for (5-9) years.
