Abstract :
This study adopts the notion that football is like any other scientific and academic fields in
the way the proficiency of its texts is assessed. Hence, with the emergence of social media
(namely, Twitter) the fans became able to describe and analyze football matches as they
are being played, making the description and analysis of football matches not limited to
football commentators and pundits. Therefore, we investigate and compare the linguistic
aspects of the professionals and the fans using SFL Bundles, a framework that combine
two theories which share the concept of formulaicity (Systemic Functional Linguistics and
Lexical bundles). The aim of this investigation and comparison is to measure the difference
in linguistic proficiency between professionals and fans in the discourse of football. To
achieve this purpose, two corpora of 5000 words are compiled, and the clauses within these
corpora are extracted in excel sheets according to the fitting SFL bundle. The results show
that the SFL Material bundle is the predominant bundle in both corpora (professionals and
fans). Nevertheless, the quantitative similarity is superficial as the qualitative analysis
reveals that some linguistic variations are actually due to the high linguistic competency of
the professionals, but other variations are due to other factors such the difference in the
mood of delivery (written and spoken). The study ends with recommending further
research to be done on a larger corpus, in addition to exploring the subsidiary SFL Bundles
which are beyond the scope of this study.
