Abstract :
People around the globe are suffering from traffic accidents, as a result of rapid urban development.
This leadsto increase in death rate and disabilities as well as psychological effects and moral damages to individuals and societies. This research aims at assessing the feasibility of utilizing Geographic information systems (GIS) for monitoring traffic-related accidents and planning future safety measures for reducing serious and fatal traffic accident. Accident data were collected for seven years from General Directorate of traffic (2012-2018) and addressed by GIS to create a Geodatabase.
This Geo-database was created based on police accident reports of the fatal and serious accidents.
These accident reports include most of the necessary information about drivers such as name, ID, age, gender, Nationality…etc., as well as the spatial data such as accident location, nodes…etc. Utilizing GIS Geoprocessing tool for spatial and non-spatial data reveals some of the distributional pattern features and site characteristics within road networks located in the Kingdom of Bahrain. Some of the significant findings are : (1) 88% of the accidents take place along highways, (2) 19 deadliest nodes distributed through the entire road networks of the kingdom, (3) 88% of the drivers are young male Bahraini, (4) Friday is the deadliest day of the week, (5) spatial pattern changing annually however some roads remain deadly all the time (6) Khalifa bin Salman Highway and Isa bin Salman Highway are the deadliest roads (7) Furthermore, excessive speed and crossing red light are main reasons of traffic accidents (8) 18-30 years age category take the great majority of the accidents (8) there is a presence of a positive relationship between the areas of traffic accidents and municipalities with high population density( capital and northern governorates (10) Finally Saloons Toyota and Nissan are the most vehicles types dangerous. The proposed system would improve accidents management and analysis. As well as upon completion the proposed system will significantly
enhance the process of recording, responding and analyzing traffic accidents and identify black spots.
Future research is highly recommended to mathematically model the prediction of future fatal
accidents locations. Mobile application is needed to automate accident collection information.
