Abstract
This study aimed at analyzing the linguistic features of the English mainstream media used to convey the efforts of the Kingdom of Bahrain in dealing with environmental issues in relation to climate change. This is closely linked to spread awareness about the issue and involve the
audience in taking action to contribute to the achievement of the UNSDGs 2030. The study also sought to fill the gap regarding discourse analysis of English mainstream media represented in the news reporting of The Gulf Daily News and The Daily Tribune newspapers on climate change
issues and the related efforts to achieve UNSDGs 2030 related to the matter. A corpus of 939 news stories (303,493 words) mentioning the Kingdom of Bahrain efforts on ‘climate change’ and ‘environment’ during the period of January 2015 to April 2022 from the news reporting of the two prominent English local newspapers namely, The Gulf Daily News and The Daily Tribune. These
stories were carefully examined quantitively using Fairclough (1989) dialectical- relational approach using the Wordsmith Tools represented in Concord and Wordlist. The results indicated that English newspapers rarely used scientific language to convey the efforts of Bahrain in dealing with that climate change and environmental development. The limited number of stories mentioning climate change and environment together reflected that the news reporting does not link them together nor to the UNSDGs 2030 which is where the national efforts are leading to. The present study is focused on the environmental goals of the UNSDGs. The study recommended that further discourse analysis studies of all UNSDGs with more diverse topics and media news
reporting in Arabic language to draw comparisons would further enhance the findings and help explain whether cross-culture variations affected the results of this study.
