Effectiveness Of An Instructional Programme For The Growth Of Listening Skills For 8th Standard Students In Intermediate Schools Although there is considerable interest in growth and development of art of listening, one among various Arabic language arts, this art, unfortunately , in intermediate curriculum of Arabic language has taken a back seat in the Kingdom of Bahrain. For this reason, a recent study has been designed and conducted to answer the following fundamental question: Is the suggested instructional programme for the growth of some listening skills for 8th standard students effective?". To answer the above question, the following questions is needed to be answer first: 1- What is the form of the suggested programme for the growth of listening skills ? 2- How effective is the programme to meet emotional and cognative goals? To answer the second question the researcher tested the following hypothesis: There is no significant difference between average marks of the students in the pre-post Language competence exam. There is no significant difference between average marks of students in all questions relating to each skill of the art of listening in the pre Language competence exam. There is no significant difference between average marks in the pre-post attitude measurement exam, of the programme. To carry out the above study, the researcher selected the group of study consisting of (33) students of the 8th standard who were registered in the Second semester of the academic year 2002/2003 at Al-Farabi Intermediate Boys School. The researcher also prepared the following instruments: 1- An instructional program for the growth of listening skills for eighth-grade students. 2- A language competence exam for the program. 3- An attitude measurement exam regarding the program. The following results were concluded: 1- An instructional program for the growth of listening skills for intermediate students has been built up. 2- The instructional program has the potential to achieve the emotional and cognitive goals. 3- There is a significant difference at the level of (0.05) between the average marks in the pre-post language competence exam of the program. 4- There is a significant difference at the level of (0.05) between the average marks of students in all questions relating to each skill of the art of listening in the pre-post language competence exam of the program 5- There is a significant difference at the level of (0.05) between the average marks in the pre-post attitude measurement exam of the program. Based on the above results, the researcher recommends the following: Redefine and construct the Arabic language curriculum at the intermediate stage to give real emphasis on building a philosophy of the art of listening, selecting the appropriate listening skills, content, educational tools, and appropriate evaluation instruments
