الملخص الإنجليزي
Abstract:
Environmental sustainability is essential to maintain life on planet Earth. Unfortunately, in the last
few decades, environmental problems such as carbon emissions, waste disposal, etc., have
increased dramatically. While recently, awareness about these problems has increased among
consumers. Thus, firms should respond to that change by greening their processes and procedures
to reduce their environmental footprint and satisfy customers.
Within this context of environmental protection, the green concept has gained attention in many
countries. As a result, firms have started the process of implementation of green aspects in their
activities. One of the major aspects is the adoption of Green Supply Chain Management (GSCM).
This study investigates GSCM practices by exploring the level of their implementation and the
relationship between seven specific GSCM practices and three organizational performance
measures- economic performance, environmental performance, and operational performance - in
food and beverage (F&B) manufacturers in Bahrain.
The study is descriptive and cross-sectional in nature. In order to achieve the research aim, a
deductive and quantitative approach was adopted. For the data collection, a structured
questionnaire was developed to test the researched hypotheses and sent to organization managers.
A total of 69 responses were collected from 149 Bahraini F&B manufacturing managers using a
convenience sampling method with a response rate of 61.6%. To test the study's hypotheses,
partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) has been used.
The results showed that each of the following five GSCM practices has a positive correlation to at
least one of the organizational performance measures used: green purchasing (GP), cooperation
with customers (CC), investment recovery (IR), green packaging (GrP), and reverse logistics (RL).
However, the GCSM practices of internal environmental management (IEM) and eco-design (ED)
did not show any significant relationship with organizational performance. Of the twenty-one
hypotheses, seven were found to be statistically significant.
The findings of this research indicate that the implementation level of GSCM is still in its early
stages in Bahraini firms. Therefore, managers need to put more effort into adopting GSCM
concepts efficiently in their firms. Moreover, a number of implications and recommendations are
suggested for the F&B manufacturers' managers, academicians, and anyone involved in
environmental affairs, which would reduce an organization's environmental footprint.
From the literature review, this is the first research that studies GSCM practices among F&B
manufacturers in Bahrain; also, it is one of the first studies that uses the PLS-SEM software for
data analysis in this topic. Therefore, the findings enrich the existing literature and improve the
understanding of the level of GSCM implementation among Bahraini manufacturers.
Finally, this research provides a starting point for further studies to investigate the adoption of
green concepts by the Bahraini manufacturers.
