Abstract:
This thesis investigates the correlation between speech acts as a linguistic variable and age
as a social variable in the field of pedagogy. It aimed to identify the types and determine
the frequency of speech acts performed by EFL university lecturers of different age groups
in relation to students' attitudes. A sample of three younger and three older lecturers were
selected in addition to a sample that consisted of their students. The qualitative methods of
recordings and observations revealed that the lecturers performed the speech acts of stating,
explaining, asking, commanding, requesting, refuting, confirming, warning, promising,
thanking, apologizing and encouraging. These types were then categorized according to
Searle to conclude that the age of the lecturer did not affect the types of illocutionary acts
they performed as both younger and older lecturers performed directives, representatives,
expressives and commissives. Regarding the frequency, younger lecturers performed
directives and expressives at a higher rate than older lecturers, whereas the older lecturers
performed representatives more frequently than younger lecturers. However, both
performed commissives at the same rate. This led to the conclusion that the age of the
lecturers does affect the frequency with which they perform illocutionary acts. Finally,
insight into students' attitudes was gained by distributing a questionnaire to the students of
the six observed lecturers. It was found that most students did not have any age preference
when responding to questions and accepting commands and requests from their lecturers.
However, among those who did have a preference, more students preferred the speech acts
to be performed by younger lecturers. Therefore, it was concluded that more students had
a positive attitude towards being asked questions and given commands and requests by
younger lecturers than by older lecturers, as they perceived younger lecturers to be more
approachable, relatable and polite.
