English Abstract
Abstract :
The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, which include Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, have experienced significant economic growth in recent years. However, this growth has also increased greenhouse gas emissions and other adverse environmental impacts. The study aims to investigate the causality relationship between economic growth and climate change in these countries in order to understand this issue. The research applied quantitative methodology and Several econometrics tests were employed, including Panel Data Regression, Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) and Granger causality for the period (2000- 2020). These methods were used to examine the relationship between economic growth and various climate change-related variables, such as carbon dioxide emissions, electricity generation, electricity consumption, annual average temperature, annual average precipitation, population density, and crude oil production. The findings indicate a causality direction between economic growth and some study variables, such as carbon dioxide emissions, electricity generation, annual average temperature, population density, and crude oil production. Furthermore, the results suggest that economic growth in the GCC countries is associated with increased emissions of greenhouse gases. The study provides recommendations for policymakers in the GCC region to consider in their efforts to promote sustainable economic growth. These include implementing policies and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, promoting renewable energy sources, and encouraging sustainable development practices.
