English Abstract
ABSTRACT:
This study has three main objectives. First, it explores the efficiency and
efficacy of the new Orientation Program 2016/2017 implemented by the
University of Bahrain, from the point of view of both instructors and
students in the English Language Center (ELC). Second, it identifies and
explains the reasons behind their perceptions and the usefulness of the
application of Program on improving students' competency in English.
Finally, the study investigates the relationship between students'
perceptions towards learning English and their performance in English
language.
A mixed method approach was used in order to obtain adequate data to
answer the research questions. The data collections tools included an
online questionnaire, which was distributed to a group of the Orientation
Program Students and their instructors in the first semester of the
academic year 2016/2017 to collect their perceptions towards the new
Orientation Program. Second, a focus group interview was carried out
with a group of the English Language Center teachers to help getting in
depth insights on teachers' points of view.
The results showed that most students and teachers had positive
perceptions towards learning/teaching English language in the
Orientation Program 2016/2017. However, students' results in the Aptis
test were not as expected. Finally, some challenges facing the Orientation
Program were addressed and a number of suggestions were presented.
