English Abstract
Abstract : This study is concerned with the MSA dubbing of formulaic expressions in 8 AmericanEnglish television series whose target audience is children. The study investigates the accuracy of translation and MSA language use found in the dubbing of selected cartoons and television shows. This is done in an attempt to assess the fulfilment of the stated aims of dubbing companies and the function of the dubbing. The theoretical framework consists of Skopos Theory, Foreignization and Domestication Theory, and the classification of translation strategies proposed by Vinay and Darbelnet. The materials of the study included the researcher's observation in addition to the translated interactions. The data was analyzed using analytical qualitative methods. The study found that the main causes of translation inaccuracy found in the sample are: (1) the implementation of an inaccurate translation strategy, (2) misinterpretation of the source text, (3) the use of colloquial Arabic within an MSA context, and (4) the use of foreign sentence structures and metaphors in the target text, as well as excessive borrowing (foreignization). It was also found that dubbing companies are not fully fulfilling their stated aims. Keywords: dubbing, children's media, MSA, Skopos, foreignization.
