Abstract:
The emergence of digital transformation has led to a qualitative leap in the performance of businesses and better and faster services for citizens. There has been much research about the success factors of this transformation, but few have focused on the digital transformation in creative industries, specifically in architectural firms. The unique thinking and design process that distinguishes the creative industries with its high dependence on workforce creativity necessitates the need for a different perspective when embarking on their digital transformation journey. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the factors affecting the successful implementation of digital transformation in the creative industry of architecture. Factors identified were people (Talents and Skills, learning and training), processes (Architectural design process, Design thinking and Decision making), and technology. In this quantitative research, primary data was collected from literature, followed by a questionnaire distributed within focus groups held with managers and architects working in the field in several architectural firms in Bahrain to capture their insights on the research phenomena from their practice experience. Descriptive statistical methods, correlation analysis, and inferential analysis methods were used to analyze and discuss the findings. The analysis showed a significant and positive relationship between the three factors (people, technology, processes) and the successful implementation of digital transformation in architectural firms. We conclude that investing in the latest technologies related to the field while training and empowering employees’ digital skills and teaching them how each technology should be used in which part of each architectural process is the key to the successful implementation of digital transformation. The research provided recommendations for better implementation of digital transformation in the creative industry of architecture. For future research, a study that links the architectural processes with the right technologies to be used in each stage of the design process that serves as a guide map for architectural firms going through the digital transformation journey is recommended.
