English Abstract
Abstract: Culture and architecture are of strong connection in phenomenology. Scholars has investigated both aspects upon different scales. While home level it is more crucial. One of current topics that implies both, is the residential open-plan trend. The open-plan is known by making no boundary walls between living and dining, or kitchen space. As it is a worldwide concept, it is not designed in corresponding to Bahraini culture. Therefore, the research aims to investigate the suitability of open-plan residential trend upon Bahraini culture and users. To reflect on respecting cultural values for a better home experience. The research has implemented ethnographic approach and triangulation of data to insure reliability of data. Conducted interviews with professionals' group and open-plan inhabitants, along with exploring homes case-studies. Mapping the linkages between culture and open-plan home experience from architects, academics, and users perspective. The interviews are analyzed using Nvivo program, aligning with grounded theory needs of thematic analysis. Also, case studies are done to explore the difference among middle class traditional Bahraini homes, hybrid architecture, and the recent open-plan homes. That is to understand how the life-style changes by the architectural boundaries. The research confirmed the relationship between architecture and culture implementation in homes. Highlighting the role of architects, designers, and cultural change, in parallel with globalization. Concluded with a set of proposed solutions for better implementation of open-plan in reference to Bahraini culture. This will contribute to fill the gap in the knowledge and to set a starting point for further research on the Bahraini/Gulf culture and architecture.
